A degree in turfgrass science might sound appealing if you love the outdoors and working with plants. But let’s be honest – opportunities for steady, well-paid work directly utilizing knowledge of grasses and soils are pretty slim.

Sure, some grads may find jobs maintaining golf courses, sports fields, or landscaping. But many of those roles don’t require a full 4-year degree.

Competition is high, pay starts low, and upward mobility is limited. Unless you plan on managing a grounds crew at a major venue someday, most turfgrass science degree holders end up having to pivot to other fields entirely. It’s a very niche program that doesn’t translate well into mainstream careers or big salaries for the average grad.
